Love will be in the air for both the furry and human kind at our Valentine's Day Pet Portraits on Feb. 4.

You are cordially invited to stop by EHS to have your pets' photos taken in front of a festive backdrop, just in time to create Valentine's Day cards. Furry Valentines are, after all, the purrfect gift for the animal lovers in your life!

For a $10 donation to EHS, you will receive a keepsake 4x6 photo; for an additional $10, you can get a CD with the digital files.

Mark your calendars: Paws in the Park is March 25 at Kit Carson Park! Join us and 2012 Spokespet Bogey (pictured here) as we celebrate the bond between people and their pets and raise funding and awareness for animals in need.

Online registration for Paws in the Park is open. Click HERE to register now. Everyone who registers online before Feb. 1 will be entered into a drawing for a gift basket of pet goodies!

Beginning at 7 a.m. Dec. 14, we will be participating in the San Diego Foundation's first-ever giveBIG San Diego match day initiative.

During a 36-hour period, you will have the opportunity to make online donations to the Escondido Humane Society, and the Foundation will match donation totals in a pro-rated amount. Here's how the event will work:

From 7 a.m. Dec. 14th to 7 p.m. Dec. 15th, you will be able to make a donation to EHS on our website or on the Foundation's customized giveBIG event web page. The link will not be available until 7 a.m. Dec. 14.
You choose your donation amount, with a minimum gift starting at $25. There is no maximum. All donations are tax deductible and irrevocable. Donations must be made using Visa or MasterCard.
The minimum gift is $25. The Foundation will match, on a pro-rated basis, the total of donations made during the 36-hour period.
On Dec. 14, there will be a live leader board where you can track donations by organization in real time. Help us be the leader of the pack!

Fall in Love with a Furry New Friend

Fall is quickly approaching, which means cooler weather and indoor activities. It is the perfect time to cozy up with the furry love of your life.

The Escondido Humane Society is inviting the community to Fall in Love by reducing animal adoption fees to just $25 this fall.

The reduced adoption fees will be offered from Sept. 6 through Oct. 31 and include microchipping, spay/neuter, vaccinations and veterinary exam. During this time, adoption fees on a second animal will also be waived.

The Escondido Humane Society Adoption Center is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week. Log on to www.escondidohumanesociety.org to view animals available for adoption or meet them in person at the shelter, 3450 E. Valley Parkway. For more information, call (760) 888-2275, Option 3.

Take a Furry Vacation With Some Bunny

Did you know that bunnies breed most frequently during the spring and summer months? In honor of our “Summer Bunnies," like Hines and Kym (pictured here), the Escondido Humane Society, the Chula Vista Animal Care Facility and the San Diego Humane Society have teamed up for a month-long campaign to find loving homes for these cute cottontails.

In honor of the adoption campaign’s theme “Take a Furry Vacation with Some Bunny,” EHS and the other participating animal shelters will spotlight these world travelers with reduced adoption fees and fun activities now through Sept. 5. Activities include:

A reduced adoption fee of $20 now through Sept. 5 (includes microchip and spay/neuter).
A bunny buddy can be adopted at no additional charge (bunnies love friends!).
There will be special trivia and contests on Facebook and Twitter

Why we do the work we do

We are officially in the "Dog Days of Summer." The temperature is rising, and so is the number of homeless animals in our community who need our help. Our work is tireless and at times difficult, but we give our all every day because we know the animals are worth it and because we know that the work we do changes lives - for our animals and for the lucky people who adopt them. The inspiring and heartwarming story about Cassidy, who was adopted on June 25, 2011, really drives that point home. We hope you enjoy it as much as we have!

My name is Jenni, and I am Cassidy's new mom. We adopted her just three weeks ago today. Now (with a lot of training) she is my service dog. She is still in training to be my guide dog.

I am only 46 and have macular degeneration. This disease is causing progressive blindness to both of my eyes. I cannot drive at night, and within one year I will not be driving at all. Cassidy is being trained by a program called "Shelter Dogs To Dream Dogs." Cassidy will be passing her "Therapy Dog" test in August and a few months after that she will be completely trained to safely walk a blind person anywhere.

As you might already know, a "Service Dog" is not required to pass a "therapy dog" test. "Shelter Dogs To Dream Dogs" and Catherine Sacks insist that all dogs who go through their program must be able to pass a "Therapy Dog" test. This means Cassidy can visit people in hospitals and nursing homes.

I have Lupus and get sick often. Cassidy goes to all of my doctor's appointments. She always cheers people up when they are sitting in the waiting room. She has even been to the Emergency Room with me because I got very sick one night. She behaved perfectly and charmed the doctors, nurses and patients with her sweet eyes and gentle kisses.

My husband, John, and I want you to know that Cassidy is a great ambassador for the Escondido Humane Society. She has and is proving that service dogs can come from a shelter. Service dogs can also be part if not all pit bull. Thank you so much for taking care of my angel dog Cassidy long enough for us to find one another. She is not only an extension of my body's needs, but she is an extension of your shelter's love to anyone who comes into contact with her.

With tears in my eyes I say this to you: My husband and I will be forever grateful to the Escondido Humane Society. Barbara, Linda, the vet, the staff and all of the amazing, angelic volunteers. I (we) could never put into words what it means to have my life back thanks to a little stray pit bull mix named Cassidy.

With all of the gratitude a heart can hold, we THANK YOU ALL!

P.S. One more thing ... Cassidy is a dog who has a job, but most evenings as the sun is setting we walk her down to the beach. She, and only she, frolics in the sand and shallow surf. Because she is a trained and licensed service dog, she is allowed to go anywhere I go. We make sure she has a lot of fun every day. She makes sure I have fun every day, too.

Fourth of July safety for pets

Food, flags, family and fireworks are just a few of the fun events associated with the 4^th of July. While most celebrations include a wide variety of activities for people and pets alike, there are also a lot of risks for animals associated with this holiday. If you plan on bringing your furry companion with you to enjoy the festivities this year, here are some safety tips to keep in mind:

Fireworks: The loud noises and fiery blasts associated with these pyrotechnics can be very traumatic for most animals. This stress can take the form of shivering, cowering, destructive chewing rampages or animals running away to escape. During this time, local animal shelters see a significant upsurge in the number of lost and stray animals coming through their doors. To be on the safe side, it’s best to leave your pets safe at home for this part of the Independence Day celebration, preferably in a quiet room where there are no windows. Remove any items that your pet could destroy, and turn on a TV or radio to distract your pets from loud noises and help them to relax. It’s also a good idea to create a special area in your home where your pet feels safe, such as a crate or kennel.
One of the most important things you can do to keep your pets safe during the holiday is to make sure they wear proper identification at all times and that they are microchipped so they can be returned home quickly if lost. We provide microchipping here at the Escondido Humane Society for $35.
Uphold the no scraps rule: There will undoubtedly be an abundance of delicious food available at barbecues and celebrations. Many types of human foods can cause your pet to vomit or have diarrhea. Additionally, a lot of the food present at Independence Day gatherings (avocado, bones, grapes, raisins or onions) is poisonous to dogs. Let your family and friends know not to feed your pet, and remain vigilant in making sure your request is being respected.
Protect your pet from the sun: Celebrating all day outdoors in the sun will take its toll on your furry friend. Provide your pet with plenty of water and access to shaded areas throughout the day. Beware of hot asphalt, as it can burn the bottom of your pet’s paws and cause painful blisters. Also, protect your pet from the sun with sunscreen. Human sunscreen has certain chemicals that can be harmful to pets if ingested, so be sure to use sunscreen that is made specifically for animals.
4^th of July decorations: These ornamental items can easily be mistaken for chew toys. Glow sticks are one dangerous decoration in particular that can pose a serious health threat to your pet if its contents are ingested.
Look for lighter fluid and matches strewn about: Matches contain chemicals that can cause kidney damage in animals. Furthermore, ingesting lighter fluid can lead to severe breathing problems, gastrointestinal irritation or the depression of the central nervous system. These items are commonly tossed aside on the ground or low surfaces, so be mindful of where they are being stored so that your pet doesn’t have access to them.
No alcohol zone: If you and your dog are invited to a barbeque or gathering where alcohol will be served, beware of any unattended drinks. Animals are naturally curious about unknown substances they encounter. If ingested by an animal, alcohol can cause weakness, lethargy, comatose, or even death.

Summertime safety for pets

June marks the start of abundant sunshine, barbecues and long days at the beach. If you’re anything like us, you’re eager to include your furry family member in all of the alluring outdoor activities summer has to offer. But beware – as the temperature rises, so do the number of threats to your pet’s health. Here are a few tips to help you keep your pet safe and happy as you enjoy the next few months of fun in the sun together.

Water: This vital resource is just as important to animals as it is to humans, especially during warmer seasons. No matter where you are going, make sure you have plenty of fresh water for both yourself and your pet. Thirsty pets are likely to drink from puddles in the street that can contain harmful bacteria, pesticides or chemicals like antifreeze, which is fatal to dogs. So play it safe. Always provide your pet with water so they don’t go looking for it in other potentially dangerous places.

Sunburn: The sun’s rays will penetrate even the densest fur coat, which means that all animals are susceptible to sunburn, blisters and even skin cancer. Animals with lighter coats and skin are at an even greater risk. Thus, it’s important to put sunscreen on your pet’s nose, ears and lips before taking them on any outdoor adventure, and be sure to reapply as needed.

Foxtail: This barbed plant grows during the summer and is very prevalent in the landscape of the Southern California region. Animals can come into contact with this plant simply by ingesting it, sniffing it or walking through thick vegetation. These spiked clusters can become lodged in the skin, nostrils, throats (if ingested) or ear canals of many pets. If untreated, it could lead to an infection and other complications. So while you’re enjoying time outside with your pet, pay attention to where they’re wandering or what they may be chewing on. Also, it’s a good idea to check for burrowed foxtail by doing a quick body check on your pet after an outdoor adventure.

Never leave a pet in a car: This is simply just a no-no, regardless of the situation. Even if the windows are rolled down, the temperature in a car can easily climb to a dangerously high level in a matter of minutes. Your pet’s body temperature will do the same, and with fatal consequences. If you need to run errands – even short ones – it’s best to leave your pet at home.

Heatstroke: Dogs in particular are extremely susceptible to heatstroke. This risk is even higher for puppies, elderly dogs and canines with short, pushed-in faces, such as bulldogs or pugs. Pay attention to your pet’s behavior when they’ve been in the sun for a prolonged period of time, and be on the lookout for signs of heatstroke. Some classic symptoms include: heavy breathing, rapid panting, excessive drooling, lethargy and bright red gums or tongues. If you suspect your pet may be suffering from heatstroke, get them to a veterinarian immediately. In the interim, you can help cool them off by putting rubbing alcohol on their paws or icepacks on their groin area. To avoid this potentially deadly condition all together, opt for early morning and evening hours as outdoor playtime for your pet. Additionally, be sure your pets always have access to shade and water when they’re outside.

The Escondido Humane Society is delighted to invite all former animal residents back to the shelter for an alumni reunion on Saturday, June 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This inaugural event will feature food, games, contests, shelter tours, waived adoption fees, a raffle and the opportunity to participate in a memorable group photo.

Join us as we celebrate the animals that have come through our doors and changed all of our lives, like Casey (Class of 2009, pictured here).

All of us here at the Escondido Humane Society could not be more thrilled about the success of Paws in the Park 2011. So far, we have raised $101,630 from an estimated 1,000 registered walkers (and their canine companions), event sponsors, and vendors. Yes, it was an amazing year – our best fundraising year ever on record!

Every dollar will help care for the 418 animals currently at EHS, as well as the thousands more who are expected to come through our doors this year. Join us at Kit Carson Park this Sunday, March 27, for our biggest event of the year - Paws in the Park!

Join the hundreds of walkers and their canine companions who will be on hand Sunday to raise funding and awareness for homeless animals in our community. Bring your dog, or walk in honor or memory of a pet who has touched your life, and feel great knowing that your efforts will help care for animals who need us the most!

Registration opens at 8 a.m. Pre-register online at www.firstgiving.com/ehs, or register on the day of the event by downloading a pledge form HERE and bringing it to the walk. The walk kicks off at 9 a.m. and is followed by a post-walk celebration complete with contests, games for people and pets alike, entertainment, food, shopping and more.

In addition to these post-walk festivities, we also will be joined by special guests Tamilee Webb, star of the "Buns of Steel" series; Rev. Canon Lee B. Teed, who will lead us on a Blessing of the Animals; Why Dogs Fly; and Paws in the Park 2011 Spokespet Elsa! As an independent nonprofit organization, we depend on animal lovers like you to support our lifesaving work. We just added Why Dogs Fly to our post-walk festivities! Al and his canine team of disc dogs, including George, Gracie and Roxy, are bringing their high-energy performance to Kit Carson Park for your enjoyment. You won't want to miss it!

Brooke Landau of San Diego 6, our presenting media sponsor, also was added to our lineup this week. Brooke is the weekend weathercaster for San Diego 6 and is a Paws in the Park veteran, doing her live weather hits from the event for the past two years. This year, we are excited to announce that she will be joining us as our event emcee!

What is Paws in the Park?

Paws in the Park is the largest dog walk in North San Diego County and is the Escondido Humane Society's biggest fundraiser of the year. The event supports animal rescue, rehabilitation and adoption programs at EHS and helps us care for the 4,500 animals who come through our doors every year.

Can you give some special pets a date for Valentine's Day?

Many of our black and black-and-white combination dogs and cats have dressed to impress in hopes of finding that special date for Valentine's Day. Perhaps you could be the perfect match they've been waiting for!

Because love is so priceless, we are waiving our normal adoption fees on all adult and senior dogs and cats with all-black fur, like Joan (pictured here), or black-and-white combination fur and allowing adopters to name their own adoption fee. These pets are dressed to the nines and are ready for that special someone to sweep them off their feet and into loving homes. The special will run Feb. 12-14.

We've lowered our adoption fees!

To make it easier for you to add a new furry family member to your home, we have permanently lowered our adoption fees for puppies and kittens and adult cats and dogs, like Neo (pictured here).

The new fees are:

• $110 for puppies and kittens (up to 6 months)
• $85 for adult cats and dogs(6 months to 7 years)

But that's not all! We've also added a "Best Buddies" option: Adopt one adult cat at the regular $85 fee and the second adult cat's fee is waived!

The adoption fee for senior dogs and cats (7 years and older) remains $55; rabbit adoption fees remain $45 for all ages.

It's Paws in the Park time!

Mark your calendars: Paws in the Park is March 27 at Kit Carson Park! Join us as we celebrate the bond between people and their pets and raise funding and awareness for animals in need.

Registration for Paws in the Park is open now. Click HERE to register or call (760) 888-2235. Everyone who registers online before Feb. 1 will be entered into a drawing for a gift basket of pet goodies!

Registration is free, and walk registrants will receive incentive prizes such as T-shirts, doggie bandanas and gift cards based on the amount of pledges raised.

Heartwarming kindness

Clutching his mother's hand, Thomas (pictured here) visited EHS to donate towels, canned food, and toys for our dogs and cats. He included pictures of our animals printed from our website, pasted onto crayon artwork of happy scenes. He excitedly told us that Santa would be bringing us even more food, bedding, and toys for the animals.

We asked him what he asked Santa to bring him. "For me?" he asked, clearly stumped. "Yes, for you," we replied. "Oh, I didn't ask for anything for me. I only asked for things for the animals." With a big smile, he continues to list the many items that Santa will be bringing the animals at EHS.

The holiday season in a shelter can be especially tough on the heart. Almost 600 animals will spend the New Year at EHS, a warm, safe and loving place - but not a home. We wonder how many more animals will be left on the streets in 2011 ... will it be 5,000 like last year? Will it be more?

But the innocent, wholehearted generosity of kids like Thomas - and many other people of all ages who do what they can for the animals - gives us great hope for all of the sweet animals in our care.

Thank you to all of the amazing friends of the animals at EHS for greeting homeless animals with unwavering generosity and for reminding us all of our own power to do good.

Pet Photos with Santa and Holiday Boutique

On Dec. 4, Santa himself will be making a special stop at the Escondido Humane Society to bring good tidings and cheer to animals in need.

Pet Photos with Santa and Holiday Boutique is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the shelter, 3450 E. Valley Parkway. Whether naughty or nice, all pets can meet Santa and have their photo taken with him and their families. For a $10 donation to Humane Society animals, participants will receive a keepsake 4x6 photo; for an additional $10, they can get a CD with the digital file, just in time to create holiday cards with the entire family. Additional packages are available upon request.

Those who don't have pets of their own but still want to bring joy to animals at the Humane Society can stop by the Holiday Boutique and bake sale at the shelter, where gourmet gifts for dogs and cats and homemade presents for people and pets alike will be available.

November is Adopt-A-Senior-Pet Month

Each year, November marks national Adopt-a-Senior Pet Month. Sadly, older homeless pets like Chandler, pictured here, are often overlooked for their younger counterparts, and many people shy away from adopting senior pets because they are afraid of how soon they might lose them. But every animal needs and deserves love - even the older ones. Their lives, and yours, will be richer for helping these precious pets live out their golden years in loving homes.

There are many benefits to adopting senior pets, including:

They have calmer temperaments and better manners. But don’t let their calm side fool you: senior pets are still very active, but they are less likely to have that puppy energy that challenges even the most patient owners. Seniors often enjoy just lounging with their family or going for short, quiet walks.

Senior pets are easier to train and maintain their focus. Younger dogs especially have short attention spans, while older dogs learn quickly and are eager to please.

Older pets settle into your household a lot easier. Dogs are often already housetrained and will know how to ask to be let outside, and cats will know how to use their litter boxes. Older pets also are past the chewing and scratching stages and are content to find a soft place to nap.

You'll have more time for yourself and to enjoy your pet, instead of cleaning up after them, attending to frequent bathroom breaks, teaching them manners, and all the other stuff that's necessary when you have a youngster.

What you see is what you get. You know how big your dog or cat is going to be, his or her temperament and personality, and their activity level.

Senior pets have a lot of love left to give and form bonds easily.

Senior pets usually need less exercise and have less energy than their younger counterparts.

No matter the age, pets provide us with love and companionship and improve mental and physical health. In addition to the benefits of the heart, independent studies have shown that owning a pet can lower blood pressure, reduce stress levels and depression, increase physical activity and lengthen your lifespan.

Tails at Twilight a magical night for EHS

Thank you to everyone who helped make our 17th annual Tails at Twilight Gala a great success!

More than 200 people and their well-dressed canine companions filled the tent at the Old Richland Schoolhouse on Sept. 25. Canine companions were invited to the event for the second straight year, and some even came dressed to impress in their own tuxedos and bow ties.

The event raised funds for animals currently in our care, as well as the thousands more that will come to us this year in need of a safe haven and new homes.

Our VIP guests enjoyed an exclusive sWAG Bag, specialty wines sponsored by Belle Marie Winery, delicious hors d’oeuvres, entertainment by award-winning blues musician Tomcat Courtney, and an auction preview. All guests were treated to a hosted bar of wine and beer, delectable dining options, entertainment, and special shelter guests. Dog Butlers will cater to the needs of our well-mannered, leashed canine friends, and all canine guests with a reserved seat will enjoy an exclusive Doggie Bag sponsored by the Dog Pad.

Event emcee Heather Myers from San Diego 6 and her dog, Capone, joined us in awarding the Humane Hero award to Ross Rose for his leadership support to animals at the Escondido Humane Society. The evening concluded with a show by renowned magician Joel Ward.

Just because Tails at Twilight is over doesn't mean the fun and fundraising have to stop. Home Sweet Home Celebration and Open House!

Join us from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, for our "Home Sweet Home" Celebration and Open House!

We will be offering tours of our facility (3450 E. Valley Parkway) every hour, during which you can meet some of our adoptable pets and learn about our programs and services. We also will be offering a microchip and vaccination clinic.

On that day only, we will be offering NO-COST adoptions for all adult pets ages 6 months and older, and 50 percent off adoptions for puppies and kittens younger than 6 months.

Foods that make you think of home, such as milk and cookies and lemonade, will be served, and there will be games for kids.

All pets are welcome, but they will not be permitted inside for the tours. Cats and bunnies must be in carriers, and dogs must be well-behaved and on 6-foot leashes at all times.

We have many exciting things to celebrate. With your support, we paid off our mortgage and now own our home for all of those animals without one. Thank you to all for supporting the Million Dollar Match for debt relief and growth. Now it's on to preparing for the future.

Drano update

Drano became a media sensation in June after he accidentally slipped down the drain and had to be rescued by a plumber who rushed to his aid. Drano's story touched many, many people in our community - and beyond - and we already have received an overwhelming interest from potential adopters.

He has had so much interest, in fact, that we are instituting a special adoption process just for him and his five siblings, who are scheduled to be available for adoption in mid-August.

Special adoption process:

In order for us to make the process as fair as possible, we will be accepting adoption applications starting now and ending at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15. All applications must be dropped off in person at the Escondido Humane Society, located at 3450 E. Valley Parkway.

All applications will be reviewed by our Adoptions staff, and only approved adopters will be eligible to take a puppy home. Approved applications will be assigned a number, and staff will use a random number generator to choose the adopter.

Find "Somebunny to Love" this Saturday

Hop on in to the Escondido Humane Society for our "Somebunny to Love" social event this Saturday. Our lovable adoptable rabbits, like Alegra (pictured here), will be meeting and greeting the public in the EHS conference room starting at 10 a.m. The San Diego House Rabbit Society also will be on hand with information about adoption and caring for your rabbit companion.

Our "Somebunny to Love" event is part of National Rabbit Week July 14-21. The campaign aims to promote responsible rabbit ownership and focuses on communicating the fact that, while they make the most fantastic companion animals for children and adults alike, bunnies require the same high levels of care, attention and commitment as dogs, cats and other animals.

Your cats' stories

My husband and I came in just over a year ago and adopted a pretty little black kitty with piercing green eyes. She was called "Happy" at the shelter but we thought she needed a more distinguished name, so she now goes by "Charlotte" (named after Jane Eyre author, Charlotte Bronte!)

She is 'mama's little girl' and follows me nearly everywhere, and she always finds a spot to nestle up beside me in bed. She now has a 'brother' who she wasn't so sure about at first, but who she thinks is okay now! She is a very calm little girl who will brush against any hand that is hanging down, and jump into any box or laundry basket left on the floor. Charlotte is mostly an indoor cat, but she sure loves to go out on our balcony and 'sight see' or just take a snooze on the chair we have out there.

Her favorite things are chasing her laser pointer, lounging on her cat tree, giving licks, and eating "Greenies" treats! She also loves the movie 'Homeward Bound' (she tries to hop into the TV screen every time it's one! Her least favorite things are car rides, being pestered by her brother, and pets on the tummy!

She is loved very much in our home, and we couldn't imagine my life without our pretty kitty!

Just wanted to give you all an update on our adoption. My Mom and I came to the Escondido Humane Society on August 27, 2009, in hopes of finding a kitten. We met a few cute kitties, but when we met Biscuit we knew we had found the one. We were helped by the lovely adoption counselor, Barbara, and in no time we had a new addition to our family.

At first Biscuit, whom we renamed Luna, was very timid and scared, but in no time her true personality emerged. She is a very sweet, playful, and curious kitty. She is quite unlike any cat we have ever had. For instance, her favorite thing to do is to play fetch! A close second is lying on laps. Luna loves to be around people and is very friendly. She is quite the diva and loves to be the center of attention.

Her only fault is that she is very mischievous and likes to find things to get into that she's not supposed to. But even then, we can't get mad at her because she is so funny and cute. To be honest, she has us wrapped around her little paw.

We are so happy to have her in our lives, and she seems to be very happy too. She runs to the door when we come home, and we can't wait to see her. We love her so much, and we want to thank all of you at Escondido Humane Society for giving us Luna, our treasure.

Contrary to popular belief, cats and dogs can get along great! Rocco (dog) and Molly (not the dog) are BFFs. We adopted Molly from the Escondido Humane Society and Rocco from the Carlsbad Animal Shelter. Cats can be just as affectionate and playful as dogs, but in a different way.

EHS is celebrating Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat Month

The Escondido Humane Society is going to the cats (and kittens) in June! To shine the spotlight on all homeless felines, we are celebrating Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat Month with an adoption promotion, specials and giveaways.

Our feline-oriented "Project Purrfect" adoption promotion is based on the hit reality TV show "Project Runway." Strut down the EHS "catwalk" to our cat adoption rooms and hallways. Several featured felines will have special tags on their kennels designating them as our "catwalk" stars. Anyone who adopts our featured cats will go home with a "kitty bag" of goodies.

During the promotion, which will be good from June 1 to 30, adoption fees for all adult cats will be discounted by 50 percent: adult cats (ages 6 months to 7 years) can be adopted for $55, while seniors (ages 7 and up) can be adopted for just $27.50.

As an added incentive, all cat adopters in June are eligible to receive a "Pawpurrazzi" photo shoot with their new four-legged family member with professional photographer Ali Helseth of Skyy Blue Photography, a package valued at more than $200! Ali took the above photo of adoptable cat Cindy and does beautiful work.

Please help us reach our goal of 100 cat and kitten adoptions for the month of June. Pass this on to your friends and co-workers. Put it on your blog or social media sites. Spread the word about all of the wonderful felines we have available for adoption ... and maybe even take one home yourself!

Adopt a "classic" pet this weekend at EHS

The Escondido History Center's annual American Heritage Classic Car Show is this Saturday, so we thought now would be the perfect time to show off our beautiful "classic" pets here at the Escondido Humane Society.

To make it easier to adopt a classic pet and new cruising buddy, like Sophie (pictured above), we are discounting all seniors' adoption fees by more than 50 percent over the Memorial Day weekend. This Friday through Monday, all pets ages 7 and older can be adopted for just $25!

This week's Escondido Humane Society Pets of the Week are Scarlett and Rhett. Here's what you need to know about them:

Meet Scarlett and Rhett! They are a cute bonded pair of 2-year-old male and female dwarf mixes, ID #s 41949 and 41950. Because they are so bonded, Rhett and Scarlett must be adopted together. Rhett has a cataract in his right eye, but it doesn't affect his personality, although it would be best to approach him on his left side so he isn't startled. He's a nice bunny and really loves Scarlett. She has a bit of attitude and definitely wears the pants in the family. But her personality has really sweetened up and they are ready to share their love with their new family. Rhett and Scarlett are available for adoption from the Escondido Humane Society and are currently living in foster care. They are available for a special adoption fee of $45 for both bunnies, which includes microchip, up-to-date vaccinations, spay and vet exam. Pet First-Aid class this Saturday

When pets have a medical emergency, being prepared can be the difference between life and death. The Escondido Humane Society’s upcoming Pet First-Aid class will ensure pet parents know what to do should an emergency strike.

Topics will include instructions for creating a pet first-aid kit; how to recognize symptoms and care for common pet ailments and emergencies; and tips on maintaining your pet's health and well-being. The class will be taught by Sue Lockhart, an American Red Cross-trained instructor.

Our Pet First-Aid class is from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 15, at the Escondido Humane Society, 3450 E. Valley Parkway. Cost is $40. To enroll, call Ina Shookhoff, director of education, at (760) 888-2261 or e-mail education@escondidohumanesociety.org.

The theme for National Volunteer Week, commemorated April 18-24, is "Celebrating People in Action." In no other place is that theme more appropriate than here at the Escondido Humane Society.

Simply put, the Escondido Humane Society would not be a success without our volunteers. Our dedicated team accomplishes extraordinary things for our animals on a daily basis. They care for the animals in many ways, from dog walking, cat cuddling, cleaning kennels and behavior support to events, supporting fundraising and public relations efforts and so much more. Not to mention all the loving attention and countless hours they give to our animals, who are truly the reason we are all here. The animals' lives are enriched immeasurably through their time and compassion.

Join us in applauding the 800+ volunteers at the Escondido Humane Society who donate their time to the animals every day. We thank you for your commitment, energy, kindness, enthusiasm, compassion and, most importantly, for always being there when the animals need you the most.

"Recycled" Pets are the Best!

The Escondido Humane Society is asking everyone to go green this Earth Day by adopting a “recycled” pet from our shelter. To make it easier to go green, we will be having a “Recycled Pets are the Best” special from April 22-25. During those days, regular adoption fees will be slashed in half for all adult animals!

Special fees will be $55 for adult dogs and cats (6 months to 7 years); $27.50 for senior dogs and cats (7 years and up); and $22.50 for rabbits of all ages. All adoption fees include spay/neuter; microchip with lifetime registration; up-to-date vaccinations; dog licensing (Escondido, San Marcos and Poway areas only); veterinary exam at EHS; wellness exam after adoption; bag of food; discounts at local pet supply, grooming and boarding partners; and behavior support for dogs and cats for lifetime of animal.

Just a few reasons why “recycled” pets are the best:

• Adoption fees are much less than the price of an animal from a pet store or breeder. Plus, all adoptable animals at the Escondido Humane Society are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and examined by a veterinarian.

• Adopting a mature dog or cat means that you avoid the demanding stage of raising a puppy or kitten. With a mature pet you also have a good idea of the animal's temperament and know its adult size. Mature pets are often house-trained and may even have some basic training.

• No. 1 reason to adopt from a shelter: The rewarding feeling associated with saving an animal's life. When you adopt from the Escondido Humane Society, you are helping to save two lives – the life of the animal you adopt, and yours!

Pet Nutrition class is this Saturday

Many people diligently read food labels for nutrition information, but what about our pet’s food? Pets have dietary needs just like us, but in some cases owners don’t know what to look for when purchasing food for their four-legged friends.

An upcoming class at the Escondido Humane Society will address these concerns by teaching owners how to pick the best food for their pet and discussing the effect a pet’s diet has on his or her health. Susan Divine-Sholar, an American Kennel Club judge who is certified by the American Nutraceutical Association, will teach the course.

The Pet Nutrition class is from 1 to 3 p.m. April 10 at the Escondido Humane Society, 3450 E. Valley Parkway. Cost is $ 30. To enroll, call Ina Shookhoff, director of education, at (760) 888-2261 or e-mail education@escondidohumanesociety.org.

Paws in the Park is a big win for the animals at the Escondido Humane Society!

Thank you to everyone who helped make our Paws in the Park dog walk the best walk to date in every way! We have reached our $100,000 fundraising goal, and the donations are still rolling in! Every dollar will help care for the 424 animals currently at the shelter, as well as the thousands more who are expected to come through the shelter’s doors this year.

An estimated 1,600 people and their canine companions - our best turnout ever! - spent the beautiful, sunny morning at Kit Carson Park to raise funding and awareness for animals awaiting a home at EHS, as well as the thousands more who will come through our doors this year in need of a safe haven and loving homes.

Everyone in attendance was treated to a day of fun and entertainment, including a K-9's Got Talent show, and wet T-shirt contest (for the dogs only!), games, raffle and Paw Vendor Expo, which boasted more than 35 vendors. Special guests included Tamilee Webb, star of the "Buns of Steel" series, and Paws in the Park 2010 Spokespet Boo (pictured here with his family at Paws in the Park).

Join the hundreds of walkers and their canine companions who will be on hand Sunday to raise money and awareness for homeless animals in our community. Bring your dog, or walk in honor or memory of a pet who has touched your life, and feel great knowing that your efforts will help care for animals who need us the most!

As an independent nonprofit organization, we depend on animal lovers like you to support our lifesaving work. Your participation in Paws in the Park will make a world of difference for animals in need. Every dollar raised for Paws in the Park will be directly transformed into shelter, food, and medical care for the 423 animals in our care right at this very moment, as well as the 4,500 more who will come through our doors this year in need of loving care and new homes ... every animal deserves a second chance. Paws in the Park may have gone to the dogs, but ALL animals at the shelter will benefit from your lifesaving work.

If tricks aren't your four-legged friend's forte, you won't want to miss our wet T-shirt contest. Don't worry, it's just for the dogs - but you can join in on the fun, too! This fun contest is a competition for dogs and their owners. During each heat, dog/owner teams run to one end of the course, dogs squeeze into a wet T-shirt, and everyone runs back to the start. The first team back to the start wins! There will be several heats, and the winners from those heats will face-off in a final race for a great prize!

There also will be giveaways, a raffle, games for people and pets, doggie kissing booth, pet confidence-building course, and Paw vendor expo, which will include such vendors as Animal Communicator Cindy Weston, Welk Resorts, Petopia.TV, artist Annie Graham, Kahoots and much more!

In addition to these post-walk festivities, we also will be joined by special guests Tamilee Webb, star of the "Buns of Steel" series, and Paws in the Park 2010 Spokespet Boo! Tamilee will go through a quick routine to get everyone pumped up before the walk, and Boo will lead the parade of walkers at 9 a.m. Heather Myers of San Diego 6 The CW will serve as master of ceremonies, and Gary Trice, San Diego's "Classic Rocking DJ," will provide music. When I came to the Escondido Humane Society as a stray in October, my coat was matted and it was apparent that I hadn’t been taken care of. But after a lot of loving care from staff and volunteers, I am ready for a new, loving home. All of the volunteers here at the shelter adore me because of my loving and friendly nature. The first thing I do when I meet people is crawl into their laps, and I want nothing more than to be close to you. The volunteers can’t say enough about how sweet and affectionate I am, and they say my new family will be lucky to have me!

A feast for the eyes and ears

The Metaphor Café in Escondido is having a night of live music, poetry and art in benefit of the Escondido Humane Society.The event will feature music by Wade Morris and All Eyes on Butterflies; art by Donna Otter, Claire Levstik and special guest Steven Drake; and poetry read by Nicole Van Noy. The forgiving nature of dogs

Boss is one handsome boy who embodies the beautiful, forgiving nature of dogs. Boss endured cruel treatment at the hands of a human before being rescued by the Escondido Humane Society. But he doesn't appear to care about the left eye he once had ... life is fun again, and it's much better to just go out for walks and enjoy lots of attention. Boss is a work in progress: he is big, strong and enthusiastic, and he is learning how to walk nicely on a leash and sit for treats. He greets new human friends with joy, and he appears to be friendly toward other dogs, though he is still very excited when he sees them. A loving home with a cozy dog bed is just what the doctor ordered for our sweet Boss.

Learn how to make the cut as a groomer

Pet owners who have always wanted to brush, comb, clip and wash their own pets can learn how at two upcoming Adult Education classes at the Escondido Humane Society.

The dog and cat grooming classes will teach pet owners how to maintain a happy, healthy – and huggable! – house pet and save money on trips to the groomer. Susan Divine-Sholar, head instructor at the California School of Dog Grooming and licensed American Kennel Club judge, will lead both courses.

The classes will be held on March 6 at the Escondido Humane Society, 3450 E. Valley Parkway. The dog grooming class is from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; the cat grooming class will follow from 1 to 3 p.m. Cost is $40 for one class, $60 for both.

The Escondido Humane Society is asking everyone to have a heart for homeless animals this Valentine's Day by adopting a pet from our shelter. We will be having a sweetheart of an adoption special this Saturday and Sunday that we hope will inspire you to consider adoption at EHS. EHS bazaar is this Saturday

Do you want to make a difference in an animal's life while shopping? If so, do we have the event for you!

We are calling all treasure hunters to stop by our bazaar from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Escondido Humane Society, 3450 E. Valley Parkway. Various vendors will be selling at the bazaar, and a variety of items will be available for purchase, including books, crafts, clothes, jewelry and, of course, items for pets.

Any individuals or teams who have registered for Paws in the Park, which will be held on March 28 at Kit Carson Park, are invited to host a booth at no cost to them to help raise money for their efforts. Booth space is $15 for all other vendors. Turn your unused items into funds for animals!

Get to know Flint:

Flint is a friendly, 2-year-old neutered male pitbull mix, available for adoption from the Escondido Humane Society's Foster Care Program. He's currently living with a guardian in Rancho Bernardo and enjoys walking around at Kit Carson Park. He lives in a condo, and he's demonstrated that he doesn't need a lot of space to be a happy dog. He just wants love and attention and some fun doggie toys. Flint is a snuggler, so you'll definitely have a buddy to cozy up to while watching TV and eating your popcorn. He's already house-trained, and crate-trained. He's friendly to all but would do best in an adult-only home or one with older kids because of his energy level and size. His adoption fee includes the cost of neutering, vaccinations, microchip ID and registration, de-worming, de-fleaing, a complimentary wellness check at local vet, a free starter bag of food, educational materials, and complimentary consultations with the shelter's behaviorist for the rest of his life. Mama K beats the odds, is ready for a home

Looking at her today, you would never know that just last week “Mama K,” as she has been dubbed by Escondido Humane Society staff, nearly died from being poisoned by rat bait.

Mama K was brought to the Escondido Humane Society last Monday afternoon by a good Samaritan who found her on the Pala Indian Reservation. Hemorrhaging and weak, she couldn’t walk or even stand and fell over as EHS medical staff came to her aid and rushed her into emergency surgery.

At first diagnosis, it was believed her hemorrhaging was a result of recently giving birth. They found eight placental marks, meaning she had given birth to at least eight babies within the past five days. (Sadly, her eight puppies are missing. There is no way for EHS staff to know what happened to them or if they have been able to survive without their mother.)

But her diagnosis quickly became more dire: she had been poisoned by rat bait. She was transferred to California Veterinary Specialists, who gave her a complete blood transfusion to save her life and treated her accordingly. She had been through a lot, and her prognosis was very guarded. She came back to EHS to continue her recovery, and within a few days she was back up on her feet and charming staff with her sweet disposition and her penchant for talking.

Mama K is now ready for a loving home of her own. She is a 4-year-old Labrador retriever mix who loves to lounge in the sun and receive affection. The Escondido Humane Society’s Paws in the Park fundraising walk and festival on Sunday, March 28, is sure to be a howling good time – for people and their pets! Just ask Boo (pictured above), our official Paws in the Park 2010 spokespet. Boo was rescued from serious abuse in Los Angeles. Today he is happy and healthy and is a big, cuddly Teddy bear. Boo will join us March 28 at Paws in the Park to help us raise funding and awareness for animals in need so they too can have happy endings just like his.

Festivities will begin with registration and a meet and greet at 8 a.m. At 9 a.m., walkers and their canine companions will embark on either a 1.5- or 2.5-mile course. The post-walk celebration gets started at 10:30 a.m. with contests and games. There also will be a raffle, Paw expo, games, food and much more!

Adoptable dogs Sarah and Princess on TV

Escondido Humane Society adoptable dogs Sarah and Princess made their TV debuts yesterday. Special thanks to Darlene White and the San Diego Animal Support Foundation for giving our adoptable animals the exposure they need to find loving forever homes.

Sarah is a 7-year-old, 42-pound female terrier who's currently in a foster home with a family who says she is an absolute pleasure to have as a houseguest. She's well-behaved, housebroken, crate-trained and loves to be around people. While she was at the Escondido Humane Society, we discovered she had a severe ear infection. Because of generous donations from the public, she was able to receive an operation that removed both of her ear canals to avoid chronic and very painful ear infections in the future. Unfortunately, that also leaves her deaf, but otherwise in perfect health. Because of her lack of hearing, she should go to a home with older kids; however, her foster mom's grandchildren, ages 4, 7 and 10, visited during the holidays, and Sarah just loved them!

Princess is a 1-year-old, spayed female Scruffy Terrier mix who was found as a stray in Escondido in November. She lives in a foster home with another small dog, where she has proven to be an excellent houseguest. She's very fun and playful, and because she's in a foster home, her foster family is happy to vouch for her behavior.

As 2009 comes to an end and we take time to reflect on all of our successes this past year, the one thing we are most grateful for is you. Thanks to your support of the Escondido Humane Society, thousands of homeless, abandoned, abused and neglected animals were given a second chance at love this past year.

Our animals' many happy endings are possible because of your support. Unfortunately, our work is never done: At this very moment, homeless animals are coming through our doors in need of safe shelter, loving care and new homes.

A look back at 2009, Part II

Every adoption is special to us, but there are some that really stand out from the rest. Here are a few of the more memorable adoptions from 2009:

Casey had been at the Escondido Humane Society for nearly two years when she was adopted in September. A lot of people here at the shelter really cared about her, and she loved them all back with gusto! It was hard to understand why such a beautiful dog had to wait so long for her family to find her. All of that was forgotten the day she finally went home for good. Today, she is in a loving home and even has a playmate - Buster, another Escondido Humane Society alum - to romp and run with!

Dolly, another longtime Escondido Humane Society resident who spent more than a year waiting for a home, was adopted in November. She had quite the fan club at the shelter. Anyone who met her was charmed by her goofy antics and fun-loving personality. Her new family reports that she is a joy. She gets to go everywhere with her new dad and goes on walks every day. She has her own bed, pillow, tons of toys - and, best of all, the love only a family can bring.

After 668 days awaiting a home at the Escondido Humane Society, beautiful Sara finally found her forever family on Dec. 23. There was not a dry eye in the shelter as we said our grateful goodbyes. Our staff, volunteers and supporters could not have wished for anything more this holiday season than to see Sara leave us for good ... for the good life she deserves.

Pete went through a lot in his young life. He was hit by a car, resulting in a badly injured leg that had to be amputated. Despite the severe pain he must have been in, he still purred when held in the clinic staff's arms. It didn't take long for his loving, fun personality to shine, and he was adopted in August.

Bentley and Mercedes had to wait two years for their new family to find them, but their patience finally paid off when they were adopted in August.

Horses Haley and Sugar were confiscated from a home in San Marcos in August 2008, extremely emaciated and showing signs of severe neglect. While the road to rehabilitation was long and hard, Haley and Sugar did not have to travel it alone. They went directly into foster care, where they were gently nursed back to health and rehabilitated. Happily, Haley was adopted and recently spent her first holiday with her new family. Sugar is still waiting for her perfect match and is ready to continue on her path to recovery in a new home.

While there are too many successes to list here, there are a few stories that really stand out here at the Escondido Humane Society. Over the next week, we will list a few here on our blog. First up is Paws in the Park.

Paws in the Park

The year started off with a bang, as we held our Paws in the Park dog walk in March. It's safe to say that the event was a great success! We raised more than $90,000 and had our biggest turnout in recent years, with about 1,200 people and their dogs coming out to help us raise funds for our animals. All in attendance were treated to a day of fun and entertainment, including a wet T-shirt contest – which was a hit with everyone – and a walk warm-up with Tamilee Webb, creator of the “Buns of Steel” series.

2009 isn't even over yet, but we are already planning for next year's Paws in the Park, which will be held on March 28. Registration opens on Jan. 1 at www.firstgiving.com/ehs! Check our Web site (http://www.escondidohumanesociety.org/) for details as the event approaches.

'Tis the night before Christmas and all through the town,
every shelter is full - we are lost but not found,
Our numbers are hung on our kennels so bare,
we hope every minute that someone will care,
They'll come to adopt us and give us the call,
"Come here, Max and Sparkie - come fetch your new ball!!
But now we sit here and think of the days
we were treated so fondly - we had cute, baby ways.
Once we were little, then we grew and we grew,
now we're no longer young and we're no longer new.

So out the back door we were thrown like the trash,
they reacted so quickly - why were they so rash?
We "jump on the children”, "don't come when they call",
we "bark when they leave us", climb over the wall.
We should have been neutered, we should have been spayed,
now we suffer the consequence of the errors THEY made.
If only they'd trained us, if only we knew,
we'd have done what they asked us and worshiped them, too.
We were left in the backyard, or worse - left to roam,
now we're tired and lonely and out of a home.
They dropped us off here and they kissed us good-bye,
"Maybe someone else will give you a try."

So now here we are, all confused and alone,
in a shelter with others who long for a home.
The kind workers come through with a meal and a pat,
with so many to care for, they can't stay to chat,
They move to the next kennel, giving each of us cheer,
we know that they wonder how long we'll be here.
We lay down to sleep and sweet dreams fill our heads,
of a home filled with love and our own cozy beds.
Then we wake to see sad eyes, brimming with tears,
our friends filled with emptiness, worry, and fear.

If you can't adopt us and there's no room at the Inn,
could you help with the bills and fill our food bin?
We count on your kindness each day of the year,
can you give more than hope to everyone here?
Please make a donation to pay for the heat
and help get us something special to eat.
The shelter that cares for us wants us to live,
and more of us will, if more people will give.

Jax and Bree on TV

Escondido Humane Society adoptable dogs Jax and Bree made their TV debuts on Monday morning. Jax really showed off his personality on San Diego 6, and Bree was the perfect little lady on KUSI. Please give to the animals this holiday season

Two days before Christmas 2008, Bella huddled under a warm car in Escondido. She was 1 year old and weighed only 15 pounds, far from the 50 pounds she would weigh if she had a kinder life. She was alone, cold and starving. A Good Samaritan noticed a white tuft of fur poking from under the car and was shocked at what he found. He frantically called the Escondido Humane Society and stayed by her side, comforting her, until a Humane Officer arrived at the scene.

Bella, named for her beauty despite her shocking condition, was gently scooped up by our Humane Officer and rushed to the Escondido Humane Society. EHS medical staff, working for hours, stabilized her as best they could. Even with medical intervention, Bella was not expected to survive. A caring Humane Society foster home was located, with the understanding that the best we may offer her was medical care to ease her pain, tenderness, companionship, and a warm, safe bed so Bella will at least know some love in her short life. She would not be alone again, especially on Christmas.

Bella survived the night. And the next. She made it through the holidays. Bella often laid curled up on a blanket on the couch, gently nuzzling her foster family and eating a spoonful of special food every hour. She ate, and ate ... and ate, gaining 15 pounds in less than four weeks. Soon, she started trotting along the yard and playing. She quickly learned about tennis balls ... how to make them bounce, how to fetch, and how to jump in the air for the sheer fun of it. She approached people for affection and praise. She gave even more love back.

When her foster mom went back to work after New Year's, she took Bella to doggy daycare so she could continue to receive round-the-clock care. It was on her first day there that Bella would find her forever family, who fell in love with her at first sight. Her family came to see her every day until she was strong enough to go home. Bella is now living near the beach with her family, including a black Lab brother, and they never leave each other's side.

We hope that Bella does not remember the first year of her life. We hope that she does not even remember us. As her new family celebrates their first holidays together, we wish for Bella - and all animals - to only know the life they deserve, the life that is now hers.

Bella is one of 5,000 homeless, neglected and abused animals who come to the doors of the Escondido Humane Society each year, and one among the 155,000 more we protect in our community. Every day, for every animal, we are here, faithfully devoted to giving them the life they deserve. No matter their age, their health, or their intensive needs, we welcome all homeless animals in our area, offering them shelter, safety, medical care and love. Our door is always open.

For animals like Bella, we are often their very last hope. Despite seemingly insurmountable odds, they don't give up on us. Nor do you give up on them. You have faith that you can make a difference for animals, however big or small. Donors, volunteers and adopters like you don't simply give up on animals because it's easier to walk away. You know it's worth it. You know they deserve it. And through your support to the Escondido Humane Society, one by one, we give these precious animals the life they deserve.

Please support the Escondido Humane Society this holiday season so we can continue our lifesaving work. Every animal, every day, deserves a safe place to call home. They depend on all of us. And we depend on you. They don't ask for much, and every bit makes a difference. For animals like Bella, it's the difference of a brand new life.

Foster a Lonely Pet for the Holidays

The Escondido Humane Society has joined Petfinder's "Foster a Lonely Pet for the Holidays campaign, which is similar to the program that was portrayed in the movie "A Dog Named Christmas."

Through the program, you can make a difference in some little (or big) critter's life by giving a dog a break from shelter life and the opportunity to be in a loving home to enjoy holiday festivities. You can take a dog as early as December 21 and keep him or her (unless they should get adopted in the meantime!) until December 31. You can hardly top that for imbuing yourself with Christmas spirit!

Dreaming of a White Christmas

A White Christmas in Escondido? It sounds unlikely, but the Escondido Humane Society is making the impossible possible with a special adoption promotion for white bunnies!

During the “Dreaming of a White Christmas” adoption special, all white bunnies can be adopted for just $22.50! If you adopt a pair of bunnies and one of them is all-white, the pair can be adopted together for just $45.

The special includes only bunnies that are completely white, such as Cuddles (pictured right). It is valid from December 19 through January 9. Dear Santa Paws,

I'm Alfie. When I first came to the Escondido Humane Society, I was a shy, quiet dog. I'm now in foster care, where I'm learning that there is love out there in the world. I have blossomed into a happy dog and am ready to be someone's companion in my very own home. Maybe you can help me find a good home and a loving family who will be patient with me and help me continue to blossom into the dog everyone here knows I can be. When you find my new family, please be sure to tell them that I am not a barker, I'm crate-trained and potty-trained, I don't shed much, I enjoy my doggie bed and toys, and that I'm gentle and easy to have around.

Letters to Santa Paws

Several Escondido Humane Society adoptable animals have written letters to Santa Paws that we will be sharing here. All of the animals come in different shapes, colors, breeds, species and backgrounds, but they all have the same holiday wish: A new family to love them forever. We will be posting their letters frequently, so check back here often. First up is Sara, who has been at the Escondido Humane Society for 656 days as of Dec. 11.

Dear Santa Paws,

I’m Sara. I’ve been a very good kitty this year. I have been so patient waiting for my new family to take me home, but it's been almost two years and I'm starting to wonder if they will ever find me. And while everyone here at the Escondido Humane Society has loved me and taken care of me, two years is a long time to be without a bed, food dish, toys, treats and family of my very own. Ho, Ho, Ho! Santa himself made a special stop at the Escondido Humane Society on Dec. 5 to bring holiday cheer to animals in need.

Whether naughty or nice, all pets who stopped by got to meet Kris Kringle and have their photos taken with him, all to help homeless animals during the holidays. Presents for Pets

Skip the lines this Black Friday - Adopt a pet instead!

Black Friday is the busiest shopping day of the year. But here at the Escondido Humane Society, we are asking everyone to skip the lines and come to the shelter to take advantage of our own Black Friday deals.

Our twist on Black Friday is this: Adopt any pet with black in its coat for half-off its regular adoption fee on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The animal doesn't have to have a full black coat. Last year, the Escondido Humane Society adopted 24 animals during its one-day Black Friday adoption special. Because of its huge success, the adoption special will be extended to include the entire weekend this year!

Regular adoption fees are $160 for puppies and kittens up to 6 months; $110 for adult dogs and cats (6 months and up); $55 for senior dogs and cats (7 years and up); and $45 for all bunnies.

Luna update

Remember Luna, the 2-year-old Chihuahua who used a wheelchair to get around (http://escondidohumanesociety.blogspot.com/2009/11/special-dog.html)? Well, today she was officially adopted! Her foster mom loves her too much to part with her, so she made it official today and took her home for good. But that's not all: Luna can now walk without her special wheelchair!

Pet Photos with Santa and Holiday Boutique
